Gin, one of today’s most famous spirits, has a fascinating origin that dates back to the 17th century and traces its roots to the Netherlands. Its creation is attributed to the Dutch physician and scientist Franciscus Sylvius, who distilled alcohol with juniper berries, believing in their medicinal properties. This is how the first version of this drink, known as “genever,” was created. – a herbal distillate originally used as a medicine for various ailments, including kidney problems and digestive issues.

During the 18th century, the drink experienced an incredible rise in England, becoming extremely popular, especially among the lower classes. This period in British history is known as “ginomania,” marked by uncontrolled consumption, numerous social consequences, and growing public dissatisfaction. Since there was no effective regulation of production at the time, it was often produced in poor hygienic conditions, using cheap ingredients and additives that could even be toxic. It was extremely cheap, easily available, and often stronger than the usual standards, which contributed to a serious social problem.

In response to the growing crisis, the English government enacted a series of laws during the 18th century to regulate production and sales, limit consumption, and promote quality standardization. Despite initial resistance, these laws ultimately contributed to reducing abuse and laid the foundation for the modern industry as we know it today.

Today, gin is no longer just a folk drink from times of scarcity – it has become a symbol of elegance and sophisticated enjoyment, the foundation for numerous iconic cocktails, and an inspiration for contemporary distillers around the world.
