Rum is one of the most popular alcoholic beverages in the world, with a rich and complex history dating back to the 17th century. Most historians agree that it was first produced in the Caribbean islands, specifically in Barbados, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico, during the 17th century. Here, sugar producers discovered that molasses could be fermented into alcohol, which led to the creation of the first forms of rum.
